Volunteer of the Month: Robin Feldman

Volunteer of the Month: Robin Feldman

When Robin Feldman moved to Atlanta 11 years ago, she knew immediately she wanted to get involved with Shalom Bayit, a program of JF&CS’ Counseling Services – Tools for Life division. Shalom Bayit translates from Hebrew to “peace in the home” and provides short - and long-term assistance to those facing physical violence, or emotional or sexual abuse in their families or intimate relationships. Robin had a personal reason for showing interest in this particular division: she herself is a survivor of domestic violence.

“Domestic violence is often times swept under the carpet,” Robin says. “It is so important to raise awareness. My life changed 19 years ago, when I left my marriage with a 5-week-old son.”  Because of this experience, Robin developed a commitment to help those in similar circumstances. Her activism with Shalom Bayit includes speaking at domestic violence awareness events, where she tells her story, and being the driving force behind numerous fundraisers. Robin does all of this in the hope that others who are in similar situations to hers will have the courage to seek help.

“Robin is an inspiration,” says Wendy Lipshutz, Shalom Bayit Program Director. “She has been a partner in our mission and has brought the work of Shalom Bayit to a whole new level.” That inspiration has even spread to Robin’s son, Samuel, who has become an avid supporter of Shalom Bayit. Like his mom, Samuel works to spread awareness of domestic violence. In fact, when he had his Bar Mitzvah in 2006, his Mitzvah project was selling purple glow-in-the-dark wristbands with the words “Stop It” imprinted on them. The proceeds of this went to support Shalom Bayit. “Samuel’s involvement means a great deal to me,” Robin says. “He still to this day continues to speak with others about Shalom Bayit.”

In 2010, after several years of being an active Shalom Bayit volunteer, Robin participated in Tools for Leaders —a learning series designed to engage individuals who have shown leadership at JF&CS or elsewhere in the community who might be interested in greater leadership opportunities within our organization. It was in TFL that Robin realized just how much more at JF&CS she wanted to do. She is now involved with the food pantry, serves on both the Board Development and COPES committees, sits on our Board of Directors and is co-chairing this year’s Community of Caring luncheon. Robin is an all-around remarkable JF&CS volunteer who gives back in every way she feels she can.  “I am passionate about the agency and the great work it does,” she says. “And I enjoy getting others involved.”
